How does it feel to be among the first to descend more than two miles under the Atlantic Ocean and position your mini-sub on the rusting deck of RMS Titanic? What is it like to spend two months diving with Academy Award winning director James Cameron during his recent $14-million expedition to make a giant-screen film called Aliens of the Deep?

Dr. Joe MacInnis, a medical doctor, author and one of the world's foremost explorers, has done this and much more. He is the first person to dive and film under the North Pole. He has led or participated in more than fifty major undersea expeditions and logged more time inside the Arctic Ocean than any other scientist. As a physician-scientist he spent more than twenty years studying human performance in high-risk environments.

In the summer of 2005 Dr. MacInnis participated in a "Live-from-Inside-the-Titanic" television special with James Cameron for the Discovery Channel. The expedition involved the world's biggest research ship, 130 people, two $20-million subs and five of mini-robots. The companion book to the special, Exploring the Titanic at the Speed of Light, was released in the fall of that year.

Dr. MacInnis' presentations include dramatic deep-sea footage from Aliens of the Deep. The footage shows four research subs - $50 million worth of extreme-depth technology - exploring a volcanic vent site a half-mile under the Atlantic. Using a combination of humour and scientific acumen, he tailors each of his presentations to the theme of your conference.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE EARTH

This program is designed for audiences such as the World Wildlife Fund and the Nature Conservancy, organizations already committed to protecting the natural world. Dr. MacInnis speaks to them as a physician studying the psychology of human performance in extreme environments. He will take them into the deep ocean—an eco-system they are unfamiliar with—to reveal the qualities of character that allow us to survive in an environment that is freezing cold, totally dark, hours away from help, and where a single flaw or failure means the difference between life and death. His presentation congratulates them on their efforts to date and encourages them to continue working on their commitment to finding new ways to save Earth's eco-systems.

DEEP GREEN LEADERSHIP

Deep Green Leadership is designed for companies such as IBM, General Electric or Microsoft who know the perils of climate change and want to do something about it. Dr. MacInnis speaks to them as a physician concerned about their health and safety. He describes the similarities between the life-support systems in our subs and the life-support systems that sustain the Earth. He shows how the leadership and teamwork we use to explore the deep ocean - and the values that make them successful in their business - can help them navigate through climate change. His presentation is optimistic and upbeat and contains recent examples of how other companies are making a "deep green" difference. What makes his "eco-champion" presentations different? First, Dr MacInnis is a physician who studies the psychology of positive change. Second, he focuses on solutions, not problems. In addition, he uses a unique metaphor - survival in the deep ocean - as his central narrative. Finally, Dr. MacInnnis uses the power of dramatic, moving images to tell his story.

LEADERSHIP - 12 ESSENTIALS

LEADERSHIP - 12 ESSENTIALS takes you on a perilous journey under the ocean and into space and introduces you to twelve individuals who lead dangerous lives, work with complex systems, and personify the essential attributes of leadership. They include marine scientists who use extreme-depth research subs to explore the ocean's deepest depths and shuttle astronauts who orbit the earth at 17,000 miles an hour while constructing the International Space Station. Two miles under the ocean or more than 200 miles in space they confront lethal forces including no oxygen, sub-freezing temperatures and blood boiling, bone-crushing pressures. To survive and work effectively, they've become masters of collaboration whose skills include physical toughness, strategic imagination and team genius. Years of training and experience give them the rare dimension of character known as leadership.

Leadership is the art of influencing others to overcome challenges in a way that earns respect, confidence, and cooperation. Leaders begin their quest by analyzing and emulating the ideas and actions of men and women who inspire them. They build a leadership library and find mentors to guide them. They take advantage of every leadership opportunity and measure and record their progress.

IN HIS 4-HOUR WORKSHOP Dr. MacInnis describes his struggle to lead six first-ever science expeditions under the ice of the Arctic Ocean. In these sessions you will meet Scott Carpenter, one of the 'Original Seven' Mercury astronauts and Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon. You will hear from Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the acclaimed French undersea pioneer and James Cameron, the Academy Award winning film director. Using experiences he's shared with these and other pioneers, Dr. MacInnis introduces you to 12 essential attributes of leadership. He also outlines six steps to help you recognize these attributes and apply them to any endeavor including government, business, science or sports.
