Steven Page

Speaker, Singer, Songwriter & Canadian Music Icon

Bio

An articulate and mesmerizing speaker, Steven Page — singer, songwriter, host of The Illegal Eater, and Canadian icon — has made an indelible mark on Canada's music scene as well as its cultural landscape. He’s spent years entertaining audiences, telling stories, and carving out his place in our national conversation. Having shot to international fame as the co-founder of The Barenaked Ladies, Page now boasts an impressive solo career, where he continues to showcase his creative genius. A witty, endearing, and searingly honest speaker, Page continues to earn his rightful place in our national conversation.

Page spent over two decades with The Barenaked Ladies, writing and co-writing hit songs such as “One Week,” “The Old Apartment,” “If I Had $1000000,” and “Brian Wilson,” among dozens of others. Along the way, the band earned accolades from all over the world, sold millions of albums, received two Billboard Awards, and six Juno Awards.

As an independent artist, Page has record three albums The Vanity Project, A Singer Must Die (in collaboration with the Art of Time Ensemble), and Page One,  and has written music for both theatre and film. He also spoke at TEDx Toronto in 2012, and became the host of television’s popular program, The Illegal Eater, in 2013. Page not only hosted the show, but also wrote the theme song and contributed original music.

An Evening with Steven Page

As the lead singer of Canadian alt-rock legends Barenaked Ladies, and later, as a solo artist, Steven Page has thrilled audiences for more than 25 years. Now, he takes the stage in a different form: as a hilarious, self-deprecating, and moving keynote speaker. Reflecting on a life in the arts, Page speaks on living well, feeling better, and healing through music and song. He talks about voice: how we find it, harness it, and with its help, grow as individuals. And of course, no Steven Page talk is complete without a few choice tunes. Acoustic guitar in hand, he closes out the set with some old favourites and new gems.

Promoting Mental Health Everywhere

In a 2011 episode of CBC’s The Current, Steven Page came out about his long struggle with depression and bipolar disorder. Now, he speaks passionately on a twofold approach to promoting mental health as a society: increasing awareness and decreasing stigma. “We sustain this stigma ourselves,” he says—by not talking about our mental health issues, and thinking them a source of shame, we dissuade people from reaching out and seeking help. “Sadness, grief, those are all things we all deal with,” Page says. “The healthy brain processes it and learns to cope with it and overcome it. Sometimes the sick brain gets stuck in it.” In this talk, Page reminds us that anyone (even our favourite musicians) can suffer from mental illness, and that everyone has a role to play in ending the stigma. At the end of the night, he brings the crowd back up with a few moving songs.

The Illegal Eater

You may know Steven Page as a Canadian rock icon, or even as a mental health advocate, but his other great passion is food. Page hosted The Illegal Eater on Travel + Escape, where he journeyed across North America to discover our greatest underground restaurants, secret eateries, and pop-up diners; he’s had his own blog on Wine Spectator; and he even competed on Season Four of Chopped Canada! Enjoy an evening with Steven Page, as he explores the links between food, music, literacy, and life—and, as always, finishes off with a few choice tracks.
