Andre De Grasse

Andre De Grasse made history at the 2016 Rio Olympics when he became the first Canadian to win Olympic medals in all three sprint events in a single Games, claiming the silver behind Usain Bolt in the 200m and bronze in both the 100m and 4x100m events. At the 2020 Tokyo Games, he made history again winning gold in the 200m event — the first time a Canadian man has won the 200m since 1928 and only the third Canadian to have ever won a gold medal in the event.

De Grasse first made a name for himself in the spring of 2015 after winning gold in the 100m and 200m in a span of 45 minutes at the NCAA Championships. The next month, he sprinted to victory in the 100 and 200m events in his own backyard at the Toronto Pan Am Games before wrapping up the season competing in his first World Championships, where he took home bronze medals in the 100m and 4x100m relay.

At his Olympic debut in Rio, De Grasse set a national record of 19.80 seconds after challenging Jamaican star runner Usain Bolt in the semifinals of the 200m. He closed his debut by anchoring the 4x100m relay to bronze in a national record time of 37.64 seconds, breaking the 20-year-old mark held by the gold medal squad from Atlanta 1996.

After injury and illness slowed De Grasse down for a couple of seasons, he fought his way back to compete in the 2019 World Championships, winning medals in both the 100m and 200m events, the only male sprinter to do so at the meet. De Grasse joined Team Canada for his second Olympics at Tokyo, where he won bronze medals in the 100m and 4x100m events, and a gold medal in the 200m event. To date, he has won a medal in every Olympic event he has ever competed in.

Off the track, De Grasse seeks to inspire and empower youth through the work of the Andre De Grasse Family Foundation. He is also the co-author of the children’s book, Race With Me! published in 2021. +
