About Michael Landsberg
For years, Michael Landsberg's job was to make other people say the hard thing on camera. Then the cameras turned toward him, and he had to decide whether the man asking the questions was willing to answer one himself.
He said yes, in public, while still hosting one of the country's biggest sports shows — a risk most people in his position would never take. That decision is the reason #SickNotWeak exists today, and it's the reason his keynotes don't sound like anyone else's mental health talk: less a set of statistics, more a demonstration that the people you'd least expect are carrying this too.
Landsberg doesn't hand audiences a wellness checklist. He hands them permission — to say the thing they've been managing quietly, to ask a colleague if they're really okay, to admit that "fine" isn't always true. Rooms that expect a polished motivational talk get something closer to a confession, and they leave changed by it.
Michael Landsberg's Expertise
- Mental health advocacy & stigma reduction is Landsberg's core keynote focus — drawing on his own decades-long experience with depression to give audiences language and permission to talk about what they've been taught to hide.
- Workplace mental health is where Landsberg translates advocacy into organizational practice, helping leaders build cultures where employees can disclose struggles without fear of professional consequence.
- Vulnerability in leadership draws on Landsberg's eighteen years interviewing high-pressure athletes and executives, showing audiences that openness — not stoicism — is what actually builds trust and resilience under pressure.
- Crisis communication and public disclosure reflects Landsberg's own experience going public with a stigmatized diagnosis on national television, offering a rare first-person case study in managing personal risk while driving cultural change.
- Founder-level nonprofit leadership — as founder of the charitable foundation #SickNotWeak, Landsberg speaks with direct experience building a mission-driven organization from a personal story into a national movement.
Michael Landsberg's Bio
Michael Landsberg spent eighteen years asking sports icons the questions everyone else was too polite to ask. Then, on national television, he turned that same unflinching approach on his own decades-long struggle with depression — and became one of Canada's most trusted voices on mental health as a result.
Landsberg joined TSN in 1984 and hosted Off the Record from its 1997 debut until its 2015 finale, one of the longest-running sports talk shows in Canadian television. He later co-hosted TSN's First Up through 2021. His broadcasting résumé includes two Gemini Award nominations for Best Host or Interviewer in a Sports Program or Sportscast, plus Olympic hosting duties: Whistler host for CTV's Daytime coverage at the 2010 Vancouver Games, and anchor of TSN's Olympic Daytime during the 2012 London Games.
In 2016, Landsberg founded #SickNotWeak, a Canadian charitable foundation built to dismantle the stigma around mental illness — a mission that grew directly out of his own public disclosure. He has served as a long-time ambassador for Bell Let's Talk, and during the COVID-19 pandemic launched Isolation Nation, a digital program addressing the mental health toll of social isolation. In 2017, his advocacy work with law enforcement communities earned him the Order of Merit of the Police Forces (Meritorious Service Medal).
His 2013 documentary, Darkness and Hope: Depression, Sports, and Me, paired his own story with candid interviews of elite athletes carrying the same weight in silence. The film earned a Canadian Screen Award nomination, and the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television recognized Landsberg personally with its Humanitarian Award. The Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health later named him a Champion of Mental Health.
Nearly four decades into his broadcasting career, Landsberg now brings that same interviewer's instinct to conference and corporate stages — treating mental health not as a wellness add-on, but as a leadership and workplace culture issue that most rooms are still afraid to name out loud.

Darkness and Hope: Depression, Sports, and Me
Michael Landsberg was the charismatic and outspoken host of TSN's Off the Record—and from watching his show, you'd never guess that he has been battling mental illness and depression for most of his life. Lifting the stigma from this topic, Landsberg delivers a powerful and personal keynote on the dangerously misunderstood issues of depression and mental health. Depression can affect even the most successful of athletes—from Clara Hughes, one of the great amateur athletes in Canada, to four-time World Series winner Darryl Strawberry. Landsberg shares the story of his own battle with mental illness, as well as the unexplored stories of some of the world's most recognizable sports figures, to show us that recovery, strength and hope are possible in some of our darkest times.
